Instant Groundbait for Freshwater Fishing.
Groundbait is one of the most important aspects of bait fishing thus making it very important for anglers to use the best quality groundbait.
Groundbait is used to draw as many fish as possible into your feeding spot and to keep them in the area.
Instant Groundbait, also known as Mealiebomb, Feed or "Voer", is a drymix that you mix with water to form a pliable paste which we then knead to increase the binding of the paste.
Most of the groundbaits in South Africa are manufactured with a specialized popcorn feed as the base. The specialized popcorn feed consists of mealies that undergo a process were it is popped at a very high temperature like popcorn and then grinded and sifted to a pre-specified size. An effective, high quality groundbait is a mixture of animal feed, popcorn, sweeteners, certain particles and other uniquely selected ingredients. At Magic Baits we source our raw materialds from established and reputable companies with decades of expertise and experience to deliver only the best quality, so our Magic Baits fans can experience only the best.
Anglers use a mixing bowl or a bait bucket to mix their groundbait by moistening the groundbait with water. The groundbait is formed into balls and fed in a specific area by catapult, bait boat, rubber ducks and in other ways. It is also used to form a grounbait ball around the sinker on a trace or on a spring with a softer groundbait mix. Depending on the angler, the groundbait can be mixed to break up in mid water to create a column of feed or it can be firmer to sink to the bottom for a slower release of feed particles for the bottom feeders.
Let's talk a bit more about creating a feeding spot. As mentioned before the idea with groundbait is to create a feeding spot that will not only draw the fish into your area but also keep them in that area. To create an effective feeding spot it is important to get the feed in the exact same area with every cast, every drop with a boat and even when catapulting.
We will now look at each method separately.
1) Creating a feeding spot - Catapult.
To ensure that you feed accurately with a catapult make use of a marker. The best marker to use is a Marker Float that you can cast out, do your feeding and set up your rods at the same distance and then retrieve the marker again.
2) Creating a feeding spot - Baitboat or Rubberduck.
To ensure that you feed accurately with any type of boat make use of a marker. As soon as you've finished feeding, measure out your lines and mark the line by using a Permament Marker or a piece of tape. This will ensure that everytime you take out your line you can simply watch the line until you see the Marked area and then drop your line. With this method you will not only feed accurately but you will also drop your lines accurately.
3) Creating a feeding spot - Casting.
The best and easiest way to create an accurate feeding spot with a rod is the "clip in' method. With this method the angler uses the line clip on his reel. Line clips are used to ensure that you cast to the same spot every time. You can do it 1 of 2 ways. The first is to cast out to your desired distance or to a specific feature and then clip the line on the line clip. The second methof is to use a 'line mate' to measure out a predetermined distance and then to clip the line on the line clip. When you use a line clip, you need to bring the rod tip back in the air and cushion the impact on the clip by pushing the rod forward again. If you hit the clip abruptly, the line’s elasticity can make the rig spring back towards you.
How to correctly mix your feed.
First of all you need to shake the plastic bag that your feed is in to mix all the ingredients. While you are travelling to a fishing venue, some of the ingredients will settle in the bottom of the bag which might make it difficult or next to impossible to bind the feed. Once the feed is well mixed you can measure out 2.5 feed to 1 water.Throw your feed into a mixing bowl or a bucket and add the water. Mix the feed and the water well. For optimum results let the feed stand for 20 minutes. When I get to the venue I first mix the feed and then set-up my gear. Once you done with your set-up the feed will be ready.

At Magic Baits we use the popcorn feed as base to manufacture two groundbaits i.e. Popcorn Fine Feed and Heavyweight Feed.
1) Popcorn Fine Feed
The first feed we look at is the Popcorn Fine Feed. The base of this feed is the popcorn that we decribed earlier in the article. During the manufacturing process we add larger light particles that will go up in the water column to attract fish and we add heavy particles that will stay on the bottom to keep the fish in your feeding area. Due to the fact that this feed has lighter particles that drift around in the water it is recommended to fish with a floating bait for optimum results. We suggest you use a Hard floatie, Soft floatie, Bleeding floatie, a Medal floating bait or a Floating Gem. This excellent feed can be fished on its own or it can be mixed with the Heavyweight Feed to create what is commonly known to anglers as 50/50 Feed. The name 50/50 Feed explains exactly what it is. 50% Popcorn Fine Feed and 50% Heavyweight Feed.
1) Heavyweight Feed
The second feed that we look at is the Heavyweight Feed. The base of this feed is the popcorn that we described earlier in the article. During the manufacturing process we add a very heavy & fine raw material with very small & heavy particles that will stay on the bottom to keep the fish in your feeding area. Due to fact that this feed has the heavy particles that stays on the bottom it is recommended that you fish a bottom bait i.e. just a Instant dough, Floatie with a backing or a 'Geknipte mealie' with a backing. This excellent feed can be fished on its own or it can be mixed with the Popcorn Fine Feed to create what is commonly known to anglers as 50/50 Feed. The name 50/50 Feed explains exactly what it is. 50% Popcorn Fine Feed and 50% Heavyweight Feed.
